Bihar Lawmaker, Senior Political Leaders Get Jail Term for Murder Bid

Patna: A legislator and two former parliamentarians from Bihar have been found guilty of attempting to murder some policemen.

They, and 11 others accused have been given a 14-year jail term.

The case dates back to 1998, when former parliamentarians JD(U) Nawal Kishore Rai and RJD's Mohd Anwarul Haq, and BJP  lawmaker Ram Naresh Yadav had led a protest at the Sitamarhi collectorate over inadequate relief for flood victims.

But the demonstration had taken a violent turn, with the mob ransacking the collectorate and attacking the policemen. The police opened fire, in which five people were killed.

A case was filed against the politicians and others for attacking government servants on duty. The policemen were charged with using excessive force.

An inquiry later cleared the policemen. But when the government moved the Patna High Court a year ago in a bid to withdraw case against the politicians, the court threw out the appeal. It also asked the trial court in Sitamarhi to expedite the case.
