Patna: Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has sailed through the trust vote in the 243-member Bihar Assembly with 131 legislators voting for him. 'Had Tejashwi Resigned, I Wouldn't Be Here': Sushil Modi's Mock Thank You
During acrimonious speeches in the Bihar assembly today ahead of Nitish Kumar's trust vote, senior BJP leader Sushil Kumar Modi thanked Lalu Yadav's RJD and the Congress, now in the opposition. It stumped many for a moment, until he completed his thought.

"I would like to thank Congress and RJD. If Tejashwi had resigned I would not have been here," said Mr Modi, who was yesterday sworn in as Deputy Chief Minister, a post previously held by Lalu Yadav's son.

Tejashwi Yadav's refusal to quit as number 2 in the state government despite corruption charges precipitated the end of the two-year ruling coalition as Nitish Kumar resigned on Wednesday, dumping Lalu Yadav's RJD and the Congress. He was sworn in again 14 hours later, this time with the BJP back by his side.

Our alliance will take Bihar to new heights, says Sushil Modi after trust vote
  • An unnatural alliance died naturally
  • Congress claims of our people being with them has been proven false
  • If there was a secret voting RJD would have broken up, more than a dozen RJD MLAs would have voted for us
  • Happy that government led by Nitish Kumar has won vote of confidence
  • If Nitish Kumar proves his majority what is the need to invite the largest party
  • We claimed 131 legislators backing us, we got 131
  • We will sit down soon to discuss about the cabinet
  • Our alliance will take Bihar to new heights
  • The RJD wasn't in a position to explain charges against them
  • They didn't say one word against corruption in the assembly today
  • I am happy Nitish took the step at the right time

Secularism can't mask corruption: Nitish Kumar
  • Secularism should not be used to justify corruption. These people live in arrogance. Mandate is given to serve the people.I have tolerated everyone.
  • I said please come up with answers to corruption allegations. They were not in position to come up with answers. People are the biggest judiciary
  • We get mandate for serving the public, not serving political ambitions
  • Won't support people who make money through wrong ways

Sushil Kumar Modi speech in Bihar Assembly
  • I am thankful to RJD and Congress for giving me a chance to speak in the Vidhan Sabha.
  • I would not have been here if Tejashwi (Yadav) had resigned: Sushil Modi.
  • The mandate was not for corruption. The was was in fact for making Md Shahabuddin (serving jail in a murder case) the national general secretary of the RJD
  • CM felt that corruption can't be contained in your company. He would not have let people like Shahabuddin be with him. The mandate was not to defend benami properties.

'Aapko Sharam Nahi Aayi?' Tejashwi Attacks Nitish Kumar, Sushil Modi
Directly facing Nitish Kumar in the Bihar assembly ahead of a trust vote, Lalu Yadav's son Tejashwi Yadav made his debut speech as leader of opposition. "Aapko sharam nahin aayi? (Aren't you ashamed?)," said the 27-year-old, who was deputy Chief Minister till Nitish Kumar's abrupt resignation on Wednesday left him without a powerful post and his party RJD out of power.

Tejashwi's speech was themed around Nitish Kumar's "vishwasghaat (betrayal)". Heckled by the BJP, which sat in the government benches, junior Yadav said: "Nitish never dared to dismiss us but he ditched you people."

Nitish Kumar, sworn in yesterday as Chief Minister after a 14-hour gap, will shortly face the floor test along with the BJP and Sushil Kumar Modi as his deputy.
