Jaipur: Six men have been arrested for allegedly robbing and molesting a Spanish woman who had been on a visit to Pushkar in Rajasthan.

The woman had alleged that she and her companion were attacked on Monday when they were on their way to a temple in a rural area in Pushkar on a rented bike. The group of young men molested her, tearing her clothes off and snatched her bag. When her companion tried to stop the attackers, they hit him on his head with a stone.

The traumatized couple called the owner of the hotel they were staying in for help. He took them to a hospital in Ajmer, where they have been admitted. The man is now stable, the doctors said.

The police stepped up action after the ministry of external affairs stepped in and asked for a report on the matter. The ministry said foreign minister Sushma Swaraj spoke to Rajasthan chief minister Vasundhara Raje, who said strict action will be taken against the culprits.

The police had detained over half a dozen people in this case this morning but finally zeroed in on the six men -- all in their twenties -- whom they arrested this afternoon.

The police have also recovered the bag, mobile phone camera, credit card and other belongings of the woman.

"They were attacked by some people who tried to molest the lady. They managed to run away though they lost their bags," said Nitindeep Bulgam, a senior police officer of Ajmer.
