At Least 1 College Educated in 50 Per Cent Families in India Says Government Figures

New Delhi: Almost 50 per cent households in the country had at least one matriculate or above between 2001-11, a 10 per cent increase than the previous decade, the latest census figures released today said.

The census data, released by Registrar General and Census Commissioner of India, said around 122.9 million (49.5 per cent) of the total 248.3 million households, with at least one member of age 15 years and above, had one matriculate or more during 2011.

A decade ago, the corresponding percentage of households with at least one matriculate and above was 39.4 per cent. Similarly, the number of households with at least one graduate and above was 41.4 million (16.7 per cent) in India during 2011 as against 23.6 million (12.2 per cent) such households in 2001.

During 2011, the number of households with at least one male matriculate and above was 104.7 million (42.2 per cent) while 75.3 million (30.3 per cent) households had at least one female matriculate and above in the country.

The last Census of 2011 has also recorded about 33.2 million (13.4 per cent) households with at least one male graduate and above, and 21.9 million (8.8 per cent) households with at least one female graduate.
