Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal today condemned the killing of two labourers by suspected ULFA-Independent terrorists in Tinsukia district and said his government "vows to protect the life and property of the people".

"Such killings of unarmed innocent daily wage earners are against humanity and an act of cowardice. The state government will fight tooth and nail against such killings and will not spare anyone behind such senseless and dastardly act," he said.

Calling upon all ethnic communities, linguistic and religious minorities to rise in unison against such acts, he said, "If everyone joins hands with the government it will be easier to take the battle to the enemy's camp."

Asserting that the government would not be cowed down by acts of terrorism, Mr Sonowal said terrorism will dealt with an iron hand and security will be beefed up to foil the designs of anti-national forces.

"Our Government vows to protect the life and property of the people and will take up all necessary measures toward this end."

He directed ministers Atul Bora and Pallab Lochan Das to visit the site of the incident and to take stock of the situation. He also asked the Tinsukia district administration to provide ex-gratia to the next of kin of the deceased and arrange for proper treatment of the injured.

At a high-level meeting with top police officials, Mr Sonowal took stock of the prevailing law-and-order situation in the aftermath of the Tinsukia incident.

He directed the police brass to ensure peace and tranquillity in the state.
