Andhra govt challenges Muslim reservation verdict

New Delhi: The Andhra Pradesh government on Friday moved the Supreme Court challenging the High Court verdict striking four per cent reservation to backward Muslims in admissions and government jobs.

The state government has pleaded before the apex court admissions and jobs
given under the quota should be protected.

The government in its affidavit says, "Like backward Hindus, socially and economically backward Muslims should also get reservation. This reservation is not religion specific.

The Andhra High Court had struck down the quota saying the procedure to identify backward Muslims was done in haste. The state says the court can't strike down the act on this reason and legislature is competent to pass law for Muslim quota.
