Taped conversations of politician Amar Singh suggest a persistent and incestuous relationship between politicians and corporates. NDTV cannot verify the authenticity of the tapes that are now in the public domain. Amar Singh has told NDTV that he doubles up as an industrialist and a politician, and that the conversations that may seem inappropriate are in fact informal chats between parties that did business together. He stressed that as an industrialist, he was entitled to pursue business interests, and that he did not influence government decisions despite his considerable political stature in the Samajwadi Party. For a period of two months (December 2005-January 2006), Amar Singh's phone was tapped. At the time, Amar Singh was the second-in-command of the Samajwadi Party which was in power in Uttar Pradesh with Mulayam Singh Yadav as Chief Minister.
Amar Singh objected in the Supreme Court to his phone being tapped; he blamed Reliance Infocomm and the Congress party of illegally tapping his phone. In February 2006, the court banned the media from reporting the contents of the tapes. That ban was lifted by the court yesterday. Amar Singh withdrew his complaint against the Congress earlier this year.
Amar Singh has denied that his conversations with industrialists like Anil Ambani and Kushagra Bajaj, the Managing Director of Bajaj Hindusthan Limited are inappropriate, or that they suggest an illicit give-and-take.
"I am two-in-one. I am a businessman and a politician. I can always talk business with others. As Chairman of the UP State Development Council (during the Samajwadi Party government) I had talked on issues which concern the interest of businessmen and farmers alike...I had the power of my tongue but had no power to take decisions," he said. "I am not a saint. But I am neither a villain as is being projected," he announced.
Amar Singh, who was expelled last year from his party, said that the voice on the CDs is indeed his; but because his phone was tapped for a year, he said, a "bank" of his conversations was misused and conversations were "concocted and doctored."

In his defence, Amar Singh said these tapes are "a jovial conversation between jovial friends." He also offered this analogy, "Flirting with a lady doesn't mean I have raped her."
