Air India: More turbulence ahead

Mumbai: There's more trouble for Air India. Last month it delayed salaries; this month, once again nearly 32,000 of its employees will only get part of their salaries on time.

In a letter the Executive Director, Finance says that the Productivity Linked Incentive will only be paid towards the end of August.

The PLI is a critical component of pay and could be anywhere between 20 per cent to 150 per cent of the employees' salary.
The cause of delay: Not just that the company is running out of money, but also because it wants to revise allowances paid to employees.

MONEY TROUBLE
  • PLI: critical component of pay
  • PLI between 20-150 per cent of salary
  • Cause for delay: Revision of PLI
The Air India management says a four member committee is reviewing wage and PLI agreements of employees.

Unions says any change in allowance is a change in service conditions.

"We have written to the Labour commissioner on this violation and registered our protest," said Dinkar Shetty, President, Air Corporation Employees Union.

Unions are opposed to any reduction or revision and it could be another flashpoint between employees and the management.
