Again, Rajiv Gandhi's assassin asks for early release from jail
New Delhi: Nalini Sriharan, the woman sentenced to life for assassinating Rajiv Gandhi, has appealed again to be released from jail.

The Madras High Court has given the Tamil Nadu government two weeks to respond. She is currently in jail in Vellore.

In April this year, the same court rejected Nalini's petition which said that because of her ill-health, she should be allowed to go home. Nalini has filed a review petition against this decision.

In September 2009, Nalini went on a hunger strike to demand that she be set free. In her appeal to the Madras High Court, she said, "I would like to settle down peacefully... I am already 43. Due to my health condition after 18 years in jail, I cannot expect to live long.''

Nalini was arrested in 1991 and sentenced to death by the Supreme Court in 1999. Sonia Gandhi intervened after Nalini gave birth to a baby girl in jail, and her sentence was changed to life imprisonment.
