Patna: BJP president Amit Shah's ordeal in an elevator in Bihar last week has prompted an inquiry by the state government.

Mr Shah, along with other BJP leaders, was trapped when the lift in the state guest house in Patna got stuck between two floors on Friday. The party claimed that its leaders were stranded for around 40 minutes.

They were finally pulled out by paramilitary personnel in Mr Shah's security detail, who had to tear apart the steel doors when nothing else worked.

The state government inquiry will be headed by senior IAS officer Shishir Sinha and include two more bureaucrats and a police officer.

The incident took place at around 11.30 pm, when there was no lift operator or any other person to handle the emergency, said BJP leaders.

"The mobile phones of those trapped inside were also out of range as they were in a closed box," said BJP state President Mangal Pandey.

Mr Pandey alleged "gross dereliction of duty and irresponsibility" shown by the staff at the guest house when a leader with Z plus security was in the building.

Soon after the incident, there were demands for an investigation from BJP leaders.

The party's Bihar ally Ram Vilas Paswan, the union minister for Food and Civil Supplies, had even asked Home Minister Rajnath Singh to order an inquiry.
