After 48 hours, UP dacoit shot dead

Chitrakoot: After a 48-hour encounter and a heavy gun battle with 400 policemen, Chitrakoot's dreaded dacoit Ghanshyam Nishad has been shot dead.

He was killed while trying to escape after battling and killing four cops and injuring five others including top policemen like the state IG and DIG.

The dacoit, who had Rs 50,000 prize on him and had been on the run for years now. Ghanshyam managed to give 400 strong force a slip and flee the house he had been cornered in.

One out of three constables sent to capture the dacoit from his hideout on Thursday morning was killed. Police later rescued the other two who were trapped inside.

Ghanshyam Nishad was armed with rifles and hand grenades. The villagers were evacuated as the police set fire to the houses to smoke him out but apparently nothing worked.

On Wednesday night, the operations had to be halted, as the police did not have night operation devices.
