AAP's Nisha Singh, a Gurgaon Councillor, Allegedly Dragged, Beaten Before Arrest

AAP councillor Nisha Singh was allegedly beaten, dragged by the hair and arrested by the police in Gurgaon

New Delhi: An Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) councillor, Nisha Singh, was allegedly beaten and dragged by her hair before being arrested by the police in Gurgaon near Delhi on Saturday.

Nisha, who quit her job in Google to join politics, has been in jail since her arrest during violent protests over the demolition of slums by the Haryana Urban Development Authority on Friday. Her bail plea was put off.

Witnesses allege brutality by the police and say several women, including Nisha, were beaten.

Nisha was reportedly arrested despite her injuries and her family's request to be allowed to take her to hospital.

The arrest has become even more controversial with AAP alleging that the police spared senior Congress leaders who were also among the protesters.

Nisha and nine other women have been charged with rioting and attempted murder. AAP sources say Nisha was attacked for filming police action on her mobile phone.

She was reportedly produced before a magistrate late on Saturday night, before being sent to jail. Nisha, a graduate from the London School of Economics, joined AAP last year.
