New Delhi: Actor Aamir Khan should be heard and not threatened for "speaking the truth", CPI(M) said today, criticising the ruling BJP for not preventing its members from making "inciting" statements.

"Now an actor has spoken fearlessly - will the BJP admit it was a manufactured charge, that Bihar polls were why people were speaking up?

"Aamir Khan spoke about difficult issues with ministers present in audience. He should be heard and not threatened for speaking truth to power," CPI(M) general secretary Sitaram Yechury said in a series of tweets.

"It's not about elections but India. No one must feel insecure. Must hear these voices & reflect, not hurl counter- accusations," he said.

"Indians aren't intolerant. But the govt is seen to be silent & not stopping its members' statements & incitement. That is the issue," the Rajya Sabha member, who has moved a notice for a debate on "intolerance" for discussion during winter session of Parliament, said in the microblog.
