A Tantrik Not Doctor Attends To Ill Students In Odisha Girls' Hostel

Odisha hostel is under scanner for tantrik practices and government has promised strick action.

A tantrik was frequently called by a government-run girls' hostel in Odisha to attend to ill students. The practice was exposed after health of one of the girls deteriorated leading to her death.

The parents of the girl were informed only after she was admitted in a local hospital when she could not recover, local media reported.

The principal of the hostel in Jaipatna, 500 kilometres from capital Bhubaneshwar, had reportedly stopped the students from visiting a doctor saying the tantrik will ward off 'evil spirits' and cure them with 'puja'.

As per rules of the hostel, where 110 girls live and study free of cost, men are not allowed inside, but the principal frequently allowed the tantrik, who was accompanied by many others, reports said.

A student, who believed she was 'cured' by the tantrik, said, "A ghost used to catch us whenever we used to cry and then they (teachers) used to call the tantrik."

She also said pigeons were sacrificed by the tantrik in his last visit.

The District Administration has said that strict action will be taken after the investigation is completed.

"I have received a complaint that the principal was conducting a tantrik practice. The team has gone there today and the report will be filed tomorrow," District Magistrate Dr Brundha D told NDTV.
