Kolkata:

A day after he was removed from the post of All India General Secretary of Trinamool Congress, Mukul Roy today said leaders who replaced him in different positions "are more competent than him", but time would tell if the decision was correct.

Stressing that he very much remained a Member of Parliament and would continue to work for the party, Mr Roy told reporters at his Kanchrapara residence in North 24-Parganas district today that it would be a new beginning for the party.

"Time will speak whether the decision was correct or not. The party's ad hoc committee has decided this... I have no qualms and I don't have anything to comment on this. But I will say that only time will speak whether this was a right decision or a wrong one," Mr Roy, one-time close aide of Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee, said.

He said whether he would remain in the TMC or not "depends on the party. Leaders who are given responsibilities are quite responsible... They are more competent than me and it'll be a new beginning for them," he felt.

"I have not left people and fled. I am very much with people. I only want to be with people and continue to work for them," Mr Roy added.

Yesterday, TMC named Subrata Bakshi, Lok Sabha member from South Kolkata, as its General Secretary replacing Mr Roy. The decision came a day after Derek O'Brien was made the Leader of the Party in Rajya Sabha in Mukul Roy's place.

On whether the TMC could function in the future without him, Mr Roy said, "It can be."
