2 Children Die After Served Stale Food At Shelter Home In Kapurthala

The children were served leftover langar or community food after which they fell ill.

Kapurthala, Punjab: Two children have died and over 30 have been hospitalised with suspected food poisoning after they were allegedly served stale food at a home for mentally challenged and orphans in Punjab.

After dinner on Monday night, two of the 34 children living in the Sukhjit Ashram in Kapurthala started vomiting. One of them died at the ashram while the second child died in the hospital early morning today. The other children admitted to a civil hospital as a precautionary measure are reportedly out of danger.

One of the school attendant said the children were served leftover langar or community food after which they fell ill. 'I had warned my superiors that the food from langar is not good but he still ordered that food be served to the students,' Veena Kumari said.

Kapurthala Deputy Commissioner Jaskiran Singh has ordered a probe into the matter. "It's a case of food poisoning," he said, adding that food samples have also been taken by the health teams that are camping in the ashram.
