12 coaches of Gandhidham Express derail in Mumbai

Mumbai: It was a miraculous escape for the passengers of Gandhidham Express after 12 coaches of the train derailed at Dombivali in Mumbai.

Twelve people have been injured in the accident that took place just after midnight.

The train was on its way from Ahmedabad to Bangalore when the accident happened. It was reportedly moving in slow speed.

Some of these 12 coaches are flat on their sides while the others are tilted at an angle of more than 45 degrees.

Trains going off the track: Past incidents

  • On February 13, 2009, 12 carriages of the Coromandel Express derailed soon after the train left Jajpur Road station in Orissa.
  • On February 3, 2005, a crowded trailer that was being towed by a tractor was hit by a train 20km from Nagpur; 55 people died.
  • On June 23, 2003, the Karwar-Mumbai Central Holiday Special train derailed after crossing Vaibhavwadi station; 51 people, including three children died, 25 others were injured in Sindhudurg district of Maharashtra.
  • In December 2000, at Sarai Banjara passenger train and freight train collided head on killing 46 people and injuring at least 150.
  • On June 6, 1981, a passenger train derailed on the bridge spanning the Bagmati river and plunged into the river; 268 people died and another 300 went missing.
