Woman commits suicide over delay in marriage

Hyderabad: Five persons, four of them women, have committed suicide in separate incidents in the city and on its outskirts.

A 26-year-old woman, A Ellamma of Kakatiyakala Nagar in Medipally, torched herself on Saturday and died on Sunday. She had been suffering from health problems and not getting matrimonial alliances even as her younger sister Krupamma was betrothed a few days ago and the marriage was scheduled for April. Depressed, Ellamma immolated herself at her residence on Saturday and died on Sunday while being treated at the Osmania General Hospital.

In another incident, a 23yearold housewife, P Padma, hanged herself to death at her residence in Balapur on Saturday night. She did it reportedly unable to bear stomach pain.

A 23-year-old college student, Radhika of Chigurupalli in Parigi in neighbouring Ranga Reddy district, died while undergoing treatment at Osmania General Hospital on Saturday night. She had consumed poison on December 22 after being pulled up by her mother for refusing to go along with her to the agricultural field to do farm work.

A 50-year-old sweeper, D Renuka, who attempted suicide by immolating herself at her residence at Gowliguda on December 22, succumbed to the burns on Saturday. Her husband Madhusudhan Rao had deserted her three years ago. She committed suicide due to health and financial problems.

A 24-year-old youth, Prakash, immolated himself at Chandanagar on December 23 following a tiff with his cousin. Prakash had been working in a private firm and living alone. On December 23, he went to see his parents at Gopannapally in Chandanagar when his cousin picked an argument with him over his return. Depressed, Prakash torched himself. He died on Sunday.
