Gurgaon: Rapid Metro commuters in Gurgaon will have access to free Wi-Fi services on all trains running on the 5.1-km long six-station corridor starting today.

Sistema Shyam Teleservices, which operates under MTS brand name, has partnered with Rapid MetroRail Gurgaon Ltd for providing this service.

Apart from the Rapid Metro trains, MTS will also provide free Wi-Fi access on four stations including Sikanderpur, IndusInd Bank Cyber City, Phase 2 and Micromax Moulsari Avenue.

MTS has set up five kiosks on four Rapid Metro stations where commuters can procure Wi-Fi coupons. The service, which the company says will be experienced by 30,000 daily commuters, will remain free for six months.

"This one of its kind service will enable commuters to access fast and consistent data speeds of up to 9.8 Mbps on MTS' 3G plus network," MTS India Chief Executive Officer Dmitry Shukov told reporters in Gurgaon.

He added that MTS is also looking at opportunities to provide similar services in other public places, including metros and educational institutes in other cities.

The company said it had commissioned an internal research to gauge consumer interest in using Wi-Fi services while travelling in Rapid Metro.

The study, undertaken by AZ Research, highlighted that more than 95 per cent of commuters wanted to have access to internet while using the Rapid Metro. The percentage was highest amongst travellers in the age group of 15-35 years.

"With most of the daily commuters using smartphones and tablets, people will experience fast and consistent data speeds on MTS 3G plus network," Rapid Metro Gurgaon MD and CEO Sanjiv Rai said.
