The number of road deaths is on the rise in Goa with 316 people losing their lives in 2015, State Legislative Assembly was told.
Chief Minister Laxmikant Parsekar, in a written reply tabled on the floor of the House, stated that 297 people died in road accidents in 2013, which rose to 304 in 2014.
In 2015, as many as 316 people died while plying on roads. This year, till February, 59 lost their lives in road mishaps.
The question on the topic was tabled by Congress legislator Pandurang Madkaikar.
Responding to a query on measures taken to curb road fatalities, the chief minister said an increase of 9.94 per cent was recorded in enforcement (registration of cases) under Motor Vehicle Act, with a total of 3,19,123 cases booked in 2015 as against 2,90,265 in 2014, a rise of 28,858 cases.
"Likewise, in 2016 there is increase in enforcement by 12,755 cases under M V Act (54.12 per cent) i.e. a total of 36,322 cases booked till February this year as compared to 23,567 cases during the corresponding period of 2015," Mr Parsekar said.
He said Goa Police has identified 55 "accident prone zones", of which 33 are in North Goa and 22 in South Goa, and has forwarded a proposal to Public Works department on improvement in road engineering.
