Goa school rape case handed over to CBI

Panaji: Goa government on Monday handed over the investigation of a seven year old girl's alleged rape at a Vasco school to the CBI, following the police's failure to identify the culprit.

Government spokesperson told reporters that the state had given consent for a CBI probe, which is mandatory under Delhi Special Police Establishment Act if the Central agency is to take over a probe from a state police.

The girl was raped in the school toilet on January 14, 2013.

Mormugao Police had arrested headmistress Sharlet Furtado for destroying evidence as the staff had washed the girl and cleaned the toilet after the incident.

The police have failed to catch the culprit.
