400 Shanties Gutted in Ghaziabad Fire

Around 400 shanties were gutted in a fire near Kaushambi-Bhoapur colony in Indirapuram area

Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh: Around 400 shanties were gutted in a fire near Kaushambi-Bhoapur colony in Indirapuram area leaving more than 1,600 people homeless, an official said today.

The fire erupted on the intervening night of June 12 and 13 at around 3 am, Chief Fire Officer (CFO) VK Singh said.

More than six fire tenders from Vaishali, Sahibabad, Ghaziabad, Modi Nagar and Noida were pressed into service which took about four hours to douse the flames, he said.

The exact cause of fire is yet to be ascertained but the possibility of electrical short circuiting cannot be ruled out, he said, adding that no casualty has been reported so far.

District Magistrate Vimal Kumar Sharma said all the shanties were illegally erected on the land of Ghaziabad Development Authority therefore no compensation will be granted?to them?by the government.

However, keeping in view the humanitarian aspect, the district administration has managed things of the daily needs for the shanty-dwellers.

One Sub-Divisional Magistrate was deputed to monitor the arrangements, said the District Magistrate.
