Sonia Gandhi takes on Narendra Modi on his turf

Valsad: As Narendra Modi filed his nomination papers in Varanasi today with a spectacular roadshow preceding it, Sonia Gandhi was taking him on in Gujarat, his home turf.

"The BJP, which has broken all limits of corruption, is making baseless allegations against the Congress," the Congress president said at a rally in Valsad.

"In which BJP-ruled state have you seen an anti-corruption law?"

Mrs Gandhi also rubbished claims of exemplary development in Gujarat, the state Mr Modi has ruled since 2001. "Anyone making more than Rs.11 a day is not considered poor by the Gujarat government. You tell me, is this right? They have nothing to do with the poor," she alleged.

The BJP, she said, was "behaving as if heavens will come to earth if they come to power, but the reality is different."

Mrs Gandhi's son Rahul, who is leading the Congress party's campaign, will also tour Gujarat on Saturday.

All 26 seats of Gujarat will vote on April 30 in the seventh round of the national election that ends on May 12.

Opinion polls suggest that Mr Modi's BJP will win the most seats and voters will punish the Congress, which has been in power for a decade, for corruption and steep prices.
