At Least I Gave You Outlet to Vent Your Anger: Highlights of Narendra Modi's Speech in Amethi

BJP PM candidate Narendra Modi is garlanded during an election rally in Amethi on Monday.

Amethi: Narendra Modi today took on the Congress in one of its safest seats, Amethi, from where Rahul Gandhi is fighting the election for the third time, and declared "I want to start building India from Amethi".

Mr Modi is in Amethi to campaign for his party's candidate Smriti Irani. Here are the highlights of his speech:

  • Several phases of election are now over
  • I have travelled throughout the country, interacted with people, took their blessings. We have seen many elections but this one is going to prove all calculations by political pundits wrong
  • No one can now save maa-bete ki sarkar
  • If they get people out of jails and tie up with them, that also is not going to help. Jail ke pancchi bhi ab unhe nahin bacha sakte.
  • We have not sent Smritiji to Amethi to increase Rahulji's troubles. We don't need to do that. He is already very troubled. We have sent Smritiji to Amethi to reduce people's problems.
  • I have chosen Smriti for Amethi, now it's your turn to put the stamp of approval
  • I don't believe in the politics of revenge... we want badlaav (change), not badla (revenge)
  • I believe in my younger sister to deliver change in Amethi
  • Let  the media try this - make my sister stand in one corner and Rahul and his family in the other. Ask them names of villages in Amethi... Smriti Irani will be able to name more than 100 while Rahul and his family will not even know 10
  • I have to build India, but before all else I want to build Amethi
  • They are questioning the Gujarat Model, have they ever tried to find out what Amethi is like? Yeh log Modi ki baal ki khaal nikalne mein lage hain
  • There aren't many days left... they can abuse me as much as they want to... I am glad that I could at least give them an outlet for their anger (Abhi char din hain, mujhe suna lijiye, kum se kum Modi aapke gussa kum karne ke kaam toh aaya)
  • Look at the arrogance of the Congress, one of their leaders says "Who Smriti Irani?"
  • No one has the right to ask this... that he or she is an Indian is enough... When arrogance reaches its zenith, people lose basic courtesy
  • I'll tell them who Smriti Irani is? She is my younger sister... aap ke paapon ko dhone aayi hai
  • Earlier, the maa-beta never used to mention me... but when the entire country says Modi-Modi, they are bound to get impacted
  • Madam Sonia ji says, "Yeh Modi toh maang raha hai"... I had said "Yeh Dil Maange More"... In a democracy, the people are like god, and I'm proud that I go to the people... We ask, don't loot... your 'rajparivaar' has left poor people with no option
  • You tell me, who is better - the one who asks or the one who loots?
  • I know how difficult this time is for a mother... This mother has suffered for 10 years to get her son ready, to settle him... as a mother, your hard work is going down the drain and I can understand your troubles
  • Aur toh kya kahoon, itna hi kehta hoon - aap ke muh mein ghee shakkar
  • No one can buy the people in Amethi, it is the Election Commission's responsibility to hold free and fair elections here
  • Is it wrong to be born poor? Is it wrong to earn an honourable livelihood by selling tea? I'm being vilified because I'm not part of your world... acchey din aane wale hain, ab gareeb ke bachche aane wale hain
  • I salute the people of Amethi for asking the family tough questions
  • Smriti Irani has exposed the family... doodh ka doodh aur paani ka paani kar diya hai
  • Madam should have at least thanked the baap-bete ki sarkar of UP that they didn't put up a candidate here
  • You need good intentions to work and you need an understanding of how it needs to be done. If I want to do some development work here - the local SP, BSP MLA will support us... I say this with confidence
  • They keep saying 'I'm from your family, you knew my father' - can this country function like this?
  • Rahul bhaiyya says Modi gusse ki rajneeti kar rahe hain. I'll give you an example of such politics.
  • Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister was humiliated for not receiving Rajiv Gandhi who was at that time a party General Scretary - and his mother, Indiraji was the PM
  • Pradhan Mantri ki pagdi kisne uchchali, gussey ki rajneeti kaun karta hain
  • Congress people ask where will Modi go if he loses? Don't worry, I have my kettle ready for making tea... do you need to loot people to make ends meet?
  • I am a four-time chief minister but when my mother, who is over 90 years old, when to vote, she went in an auto-rickshaw
  • My sister will take better care of you than your won sister
  • Give this 'sevak' an opportunity for 60 months - main lootne nahin aya, maangne aya hoon
  • Pehle matdaan, phir jalpaan
