New Delhi: The University Grants Commission (UGC), the higher education authority, has accorded 12-B status to Avinashilingam University for Women. With this status, the Coimbatore based university will able to obtain various grants from UGC and also this will enable the varsity to apply for international collaboration programmes and start innovative programmes with the support of UGC.

This information was given by the University Chancellor, P R Krishnakumar in a press conference here.

According to Press Trust of India, A five-member University Grants Commission expert committee team had visited the University in December last for inclusion of the institution under section 12(B) of the UGC Act 1956. This committee submitted a report a report to UGC, based on which the status was accorded, Mr. P R Krishnakumar said

Avinashilingam University for Women was also recently re-accredited with 'A' Grade by NAAC, Krishna Kumar added.

Avinashilingam University for Women was started in 1957 by the Avinashilingam Education Trust founded by T. S. Avinashilingam Chettiar as Avinashilingam Home Science College for Women which later grow into a university.
