NEET 2017: 'Exempt Puducherry', Demands CM V Narayanasamy

New Delhi: Puducherry Chief Minister V Narayanasamy said that he had requested the Centre government to exempt his state from National Eligibility cum Entrance Test or NEET-UG based selection of students for medical colleges during the 2017-2018 academic year. Narayanasamy said that a resolution tabled by him on the floor of the Puducherry assembly on January 24 on the matter had been adopted unanimously and it had since been sent to the Health Ministry to exempt Puducherry from the NEET purview, reported Press Trust of India.

"I have written a letter to the Centre, making this plea," he told reporters at Puducherry.  "We will not be able to accept NEET based selection as schools in the Union Territory are not fully equipped to adopt the CBSE syllabus, which is the criterion for NEET based selection for medical courses", Narayanasamy added.

V Narayanasamy also said that he would place his plea to Union Health Minister when he visits Delhi. Currently, the admission process in medical colleges in Puducherry happens through Centralised Admission Committee (CENTAC). Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) , Bachelor of Ayurveda, Medicine and Surgery (BSMS), Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS), Bachelor of Veterinary Science & Animal Husbandry, Bachelor of Physiotherapy (BPT),  Bachelor of Science in Nursing and Bachelor of Science in Medical Laboratory Technology admissions in Puducherry is managed through CENTAC.

Puducherry Union Territory has one State government run medical college and seven private institutions in the union territory.

BJP in Puducherry last month backed the Centre's decision to select students to medical courses from 2017-2018 academic year on the basis of NEET (National Eligibility cum Entrance Test) and they said it will assure selection of meritorious and able students for medical courses.
Earlier, the NEET Opposition Action Committee, of representatives from political parties, had said that the proposed NEET would cause hardship to students studying under the State board and SCERT syllabus since questions in NEET are asked from the CBSE syllabus.
