Kerala Law Academy: 29 Day Stir Ends, Management Agrees To Students' Terms

Kerala Law Academy Stir ends; Management agrees to Students' terms

Thiruvananthapuram: 29 day long agitation by students at Kerala Law Academy Law college ended after the management agreed demands put forward by the students. According to reports, the stir ended on Wednesday as the management declared that Dr. Lekshmi Nair has been removed from the post of Principal. The management agreed to appoint a new principal with all required qualification as prescribed by Kerala University soon. An agreement between students and representatives has been signed in chamber of C Ravendranath, Education Minister, Kerala Government.

The Kerala Law Academy was in the eye of a storm over alleged irregularities in providing internal marks and harassment of students by Lekshmi Nair, daughter of college Director N Narayanan Nair, a close relative of a former CPI(M) MLA.

Malayala Manorama reported that according to the agreement, government will interfere if the college management backtracks on its promise.

A 73-year-old man watching the stir by students in front of the law college died yesterday of cardiac arrest, with opposition Congress and BJP blaming the 'police action' against the agitators for the death.

The agitation saw various political parties and student organisations protesting all these 29 days. CPI (M) and CPI, both constituents of Left Democratic Front warred in public regarding the agitation. Congress leader K Muraleedharan, BJP leaders K Surendran and V.V. Rajesh staged hunger strike in the course of the stir. Earlier, former Chief Minister and Chairman of Administrative Reforms Commission VS Achuthanandan had asked the government to take the land back from the academy.

Classes in Kerala Law Academy will resume from Monday. Political parties and students welcomed the decision. In another development, Kerala Law Academy advertised for the post Principal in local newspapers today which appeared in the name of college Director N Narayanan Nair.
