Axis Bank CEO Shikha Sharma: 'The choices you make will define who you become'

New Delhi: "You are poised to enter the real world tomorrow. The choices you make there will define who you become. As Dumbledore told Harry, 'It is our choices Harry, that show what we truly are, far more than our abilities'," Shikha Sharma, CEO and Managing Director, Axis Bank Ltd said this during Indian Institute of Technology Ahmedabad (IIM Ahmedabad) convocation on March 25.

In her convocation address as Chief Guest, she talked about three choices that have particularly shaped her career.

The first choice was the journeys the Axis Bank CEO took in her career, as she said', 'these journeys into roads less travelled?  For me, the key driver has always been the same - the learning curve'. 'Growth begins where your comfort zone ends', she said.

The second choice, she said, 'set that I want to talk to you about is your choice of a life partner'.

"It is a cliche; to say that the choice of a life partner is the single most important choice you will make in your life.  But of course, it is a cliche; because it is true!", she said about her partner, Sanjaya Sharma, Founder- CEO of  Recommender Labs Private Limited.

"A lot of what I am today, the achievements that were so kindly mentioned in the introduction, are a function of the partner I was lucky to have alongside my journey", she added.

"Experiences build character....", she said about the third choice.

"When faced with the minor moral dilemmas of everyday, what do you choose to do?  You can do the expedient thing, make the practical choice, take the short cut.  Or you can be led by what you believe to be the right thing to do.  Every time you decide to take the harder but more principled path, you add one more brick to the foundation of your character.  And every time you choose to compromise with what you believe in, you give yourself the licence to do it again, and you take a brick away", she said during her convocation address.
