Youth arrested for stealing by hypnotising women

New Delhi: A youth was arrested in west Delhi for allegedly hypnotising women and stealing their jewellery, police said on Tuesday.

The arrested has been identified as Hem Raj, a resident of Pandav Nagar, V Renganathan, Deputy Commissioner of Police (West), said. The arrest came following investigations into incidents of women being fooled by a group of youths.

"Although the incidents had happened, the victims were reluctant to come forward to report such incidents to police. A team was constituted to arrest the gang member," Renganathan said.

A woman was noticed chasing a youth on Monday outside the Deen Dayal Upadhyay hospital and a police team immediately apprehended Hem Raj, he said.

"The woman was cheated by Raj on March 7. While she was returning home, he got separated with his daughter.

Two youths approached her and asked her to get some food for them.

"Then, they told her that the jewellery worn by her had lost its brightness and they can polish the same in lieu of food. She fell into the trap and handed over her earrings and Rs 500 to them. They hypnotised the woman and fled with her belongings," he said.

She visited the hospital on Monday again and spotted the youth following which she chased him.

"Though it was a practice for accused persons to lay a trap by identifying the victim but this time their tricks failed and they ended up in the trap laid by the police One earring has been recovered at the instance of accused," Renganathan said.
