Two Held for Smuggling Gold Worth Rs 40 Lakh at Delhi Airport

New Delhi: Two people were detained by the customs for allegedly trying to smuggle into the country gold valued at about Rs 40 lakh at Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA).

Both the passengers had arrived on Tuesday from Qatar and Dubai, in separate flights respectively.

The man, who is a native of Kannur in Kerala, was intercepted after his arrival from Qatar.

Detailed examination of his baggage and personal search resulted in recovery of one kg gold bar having market value of Rs 26.80 lakh, a press release issued today by the customs said.

The second passenger, a Ghaziabad-based woman, was intercepted by customs officials and examination of her baggage led to the recovery of four gold bangles covered with white pearls, two watches having back cover of gold and one buckle made of the yellow metal collectively weighing 500 gms, it said.

The gold, having market value of Rs 13.40 lakh, was seized.

The total value of the gold seized in both the cases is Rs 40.20 lakh.
