New Delhi: Students of only two Kendriya Vidyalayas (Central Schools) in Delhi have opted to study German after Class 8, HRD Minister Smriti Irani said today, after the government had replaced German with Sanskrit in the institution last year.

Ms Irani was responding to a question in the Rajya Sabha on whether the facility to study the language is available in the KVs after class 8.

"The facility to study the German language as additional subject after class 8 is available in 32 KVs of Delhi. However, only KV Rangpuri and KV No. 3 in Delhi Cantt students have opted to study German after class 8," she said.

The government had replaced Sanskrit with German as the third language in the central schools last year, contending that the arrangement violated the three language formula.
