On Kiran Bedi's Turf, AAP Reaches Out to Women Voters

AAP's 'Shakti' rally in East Delhi's Krishna Nagar which is the constituency of Kiran Bedi, BJP's chief ministerial candidate

New Delhi:

In a big show of strength in the last lap of campaigning, hundreds of women workers and leaders of the Aam Aadmi Party landed in Kiran Bedi's constituency today, dancing to loud drum beats and raising slogans in praise of AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal.

Ms Bedi is Mr Kejriwal's main rival for the post of chief minister and is contesting from Krishna Nagar in East Delhi, considered a bastion of her party, the BJP. But today, cries of "Pehle Sheila hari hai, ab Bedi ki bari hai (Sheila Dikhshit lost last time, now its Bedi's turn)" filled the air in the congested locality as party leaders like actor-activist Gul Panag and former corporate honcho Meera Sanyal led the rally.

Many of the AAP women - they call themselves aam aurat (common women) - wore Kejriwal masks. The rally is strategically planned - it focusses on women's security and also features Kanchan Bhattacharya, a former Uttarakhand Director General of Police, who had a television serial based on her life.

Ms Bedi - who has made much of her experience as a former police officer in her campaign - has accorded top priority to security for women in Delhi on her list of promises.

The AAP rally is also strategically timed - Delhi votes in three days and campaigning ends tomorrow.

Mr Kejriwal will address three rallies in the city this evening as all parties attempt to pack in more in the last few days.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who has addressed three rallies in the last four days, will address one again today, this time in South Delhi's Ambedkar Nagar.

Yesterday, he ripped into Mr Kejriwal and the Aam Aadmi Party, which, NDTV's poll of opinion polls shows, has closed the gap with the BJP to negligible, and seems to have the momentum.

Analysts say AAP has made its gains at the cost of the Congress, which looks in the danger of winning even fewer seats than it did 13 months ago.

Its leader in Delhi, Ajay Maken, however, continues to insist that pre-poll assessments have been harsh on his party, which he says can surprise its rival in these elections.

In Mr Maken's constituency Sadar Bazar, Congress Vice-President Rahul Gandhi will hold a roadshow today. Mr Gandhi also addressed a rally in Jahangirpuri in north-west Delhi.
