New Delhi: To ensure women's safety in DTC buses, Delhi government today said they would deploy more home guards who will perform watch and ward duty and inform nearest local police in case of untoward incident.

Addressing home guards here, Delhi Transport minister Gopal Rai said, "They (home guards) so far in past were deployed with police, but this time, they have big challenges ahead.

"This is the first time, when home guards are being deployed as marshals in DTC buses to ensure women safety and in view of this, they have big challenges ahead."

Mr Rai said that in next two month, government will deploy around 2,000 home guards.

The Transport minister said that to strengthen public transport in the national capital, government will soon buy 2,000 buses, adding government has plans to buy 10,000 buses to cater to the public transport need of the people of Delhi.

According to a senior official, 2,000 home guards have been deployed in DTC buses so far and government will need around 12,000 such personnel to ensure safety of women travelling in the city's buses.

B B Chaudhary, commandant of home guards, said that force will perform watch and ward duty and in case of untoward incident, they will dial 100 and inform the police.

"If any woman travelling in bus complains of misconduct by a fellow passenger to a home guard, he will grab that person with the help of other passengers and will inform police for further action," he said.
