Man held for extortion

New Delhi: A 41-year-old man has been arrested for extorting money from people by posing as an executive of a power distribution company, police said on Friday.

Salil Ghai was arrested on Thursday from Janakpuri area of west Delhi.

A police officer said that Ghai reached complainant Ravinder Kumar's house in Janakpuri on Thursday to check his electric meter and told him that he would have to pay a fine of Rs.1,86,000 as the seal of his meter was broken.

"He started negotiating and finally settled for Rs.4,000. On this, Kumar became suspicious and called the PCR van," said the officer.

The police cross-checked with the power distribution firm BSES, which said that no one of his name was working for them.

During investigations, it came to light that Ghai had cheated two more people.

"Ghai revealed that he was employed with a private contractor who had the BSES tender to install meters...that's when he struck upon the idea," the officer added.
