Kolkata: Industrialist Pawan Ruia has been arrested by the West Bengal Criminal Investigation Department (CID) this morning from his residence in the national capital. He is being brought to Kolkata for questioning.

Mr Ruia, 57, who is the Chairman of the Ruia Group, had been summoned by the CID in connection with a case registered at the Dum Dum Police station in Kolkata. The complaint was registered by the Indian Railways which had alleging theft stated that goods worth Rs 50 crore belonging to them were kept at the Jessop factory. An FIR had been registered under sections 420, 406 and 409 of the Indian Penal Code. The CID says Mr Ruia is not cooperating with investigators.

Jessop & Co operates from a 63 acre premises at Jessore Road in Kolkata. A team from the railways had visited the Jessop premises in Dum Dum earlier this year. Indian Railways is a client of Jessop.

The West Bengal Police has also registered an FIR under sections 435, 436 and 120B of the Indian Penal Code after a fire recurring fires at the Jessop premises.

In 2003, the Ruia Group led by Pawan Kumar Ruia had acquired Jessop & Co which manufactured railway wagons. In 2014, the factory had shut down indefinitely and in February this year Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee announced that the West Bengal government would take over Ruia Group's Dunlop India and Jessop & Co.

Seeking relief for Mr Ruia, the Ruia Group had told the Calcutta High Court that he has nothing to with Jessop and that he is neither the Chairman of Jessop, nor a shareholder.

Mr Ruia is often referred to as the 'turnaround tycoon'. But his efforts seem to have failed with Jessop, though the company claims that the Ruia Group did manage to successfully run Jessop from 2003 till 2012, when problems erupted.
