In the Capital, seven suicide attempts within twelve hours

New Delhi: Does this say something about the quality of life in Delhi? Within a span of twelve hours seven separate cases of attempted suicide were reported from south Delhi. In one of them a 30-year-old British citizen of Indian origin allegedly tried to commit suicide by jumping down from the fourth floor of his house in Malviya Nagar area. A senior police official said that cops got a call of the incident on Sunday morning at 6.30. It is reported that he tried to commit suicide after his love affair went awry.

"The NRI was identified as Mark Raymond. He lives in house number 406 in Sarvodaya Apartment. He was studying in Australia and recently came to India to meet his father, David Home. He was talking on the phone with someone when he allegedly jumped down. He is admitted at the AIIMS trauma Centre and is undergoing treatment. His condition is stated to be critical," said the police official.

Meanwhile, police sources said that the man was in a love affair and was talking to his girlfriend before he took the extreme step. He was shouting from the terrace that he loves his girlfriend before he leapt. His father owns a marketing company in partnership and stays in Egypt. The police have sent an e-mail in to David to inform him the incident.  

A 28-year-old woman allegedly consumed poisonous substances in the second incident that took place in Govindpuri area of southeast Delhi on Saturday night. A DD entry 43-A was made in this respect with the local police station. A senior police official on condition anonymity said that the woman identified as Bhanumati and lives in Tikri Kalan extension area. "The woman was fed up with her illness and consumed poisonous substances. Her husband Bhim Singh took her to a government hospital," said the police.

Bhim Singh told MiD DAY that they got married around eight years ago and it was the first time when she has attempted suicide. "I don't know what she had eaten," he said.

In a separate incident, another 28-year-old woman tried to commit suicide by consuming some toxic pills because she was apparently fed up with a family dispute. The incident took place in Vasant Kunj (North) area of south Delhi on Saturday night at around 10.35 pm. A senior police official said that the woman lives in the area along with her husband Pradeep in Prem Apartment.

"A family dispute has triggered the incident. They got married around eight years ago and have three children," said a police official.

In the fourth incident an 18-year-old girl allegedly consumed acid after having an argument with the family members. The incident occurred in Vasant Kunj (South) area of South Delhi. The girl is admitted in the ICU of Safdarjung Hospital and under going treatment. "She is studying in class VII in a government school in Mahipalpur area. We are yet to take her statement," said a senior police official.

Another case was reported from Okhla area of southeast Delhi. Police said that they received a call at around 1:20 am that a 25-year-old woman had consumed toxic substances. "She lives in A Block in Okhla along with her husband Guru Lal. Police don't know what made her attempt suicide," said the senior police official.

A 26-year-old woman received burn injuries in Jaitpur area of southeast Delhi. Police sources said that she had tried to set herself on fire. However cops refused to divulge more information. "She lives in F Block in the area along with her husband Abdul. She has received 35 per cent burn injuries," said the police source.

And finally, the seventh incident was reported from Ambedkar Nagar area of southeast Delhi. A 26-year-old woman had consumed poison after which she was rushed to AIIMS hospital. She is undergoing treatment. It was around 11:24 pm when the police were informed about the case.

Meanwhile, speaking to MiD DAY, Delhi Police spokesperson Rajan Bhagat said that police have no role in such cases. "These are due to mental state of the victim," he said.
