Diamonds Worth Rs 2 Crore Stolen In Delhi's Preet Vihar

The diamonds had been procured from jewellers in Chandni Chowk area around four-five days back.

New Delhi: Diamonds worth Rs 2 crore were stolen under mysterious circumstances from the car of a commission agent supplying precious stones to jewellers, in Preet Vihar area of east Delhi on Wednesday.

Police said that Vijay Gupta, who works as a commission agent of diamonds and other jewels was carrying diamonds worth Rs 2 crore in his Zen car to show to some jewellers in East Delhi when the theft took place around 5 pm.

While going to show the diamonds to the buyers from Mandawli to various other parts in East Delhi, he stopped at Preet Vihar for getting his punctured car repaired. Later, he also stopped at the red light of Preet Vihar-Chitra Vihar and left his car briefly for unknown reasons, said DCP (East) Rishi Pal Singh.

"Vijay was away from the vehicle when the theft took place. He told police that he came to know about the theft when someone pointed out to him that the window of his car was broken," said the officer.

Police said that they are also verifying complainant Vijay's claim that he had noticed two bike-borne men following his car and he even ran after them when they were trying to flee.

The diamonds had been procured from jewellers in Chandni Chowk area around four-five days back. The thieves broke the window of Mr Gupta's car and ran away with the diamonds that are estimated to be worth Rs 2 crore, said the officer.

Police said the claim of theft was suspicious as Vijay had been out of a job for over an year and had recently resumed his work as a commission agent. Also, he was carrying the diamonds of other jewellers who paid him commission after the sale. He was in a situation where he didn't get to lose anything because of the theft.

A case under section 379 IPC has been registered at Preet Vihar and police is scanning the CCTV footage of the area to find clues that could lead to the thieves, said the officer.

According to the description given by Mr Gupta, sketches of the thieves are being prepared, police said.
