Delhi-Noida road rage: Cab driver runs over cop trying to stop him

New Delhi: He wanted to avoid paying a Rs 2000 fine. So, a cab driver ran his Multi Utility Vehicle (MUV) over two policemen trying to flag him down on the Delhi-Noida flyway, killing one of them on Wednesday.

Police said Yash Rai knew that he was likely to be fined for driving an unauthorised Chevrolet Tavera taxi for a call centre, so he tried to evade the traffic policemen who were signalling that he stop. To do so, he ran them over. The 22-year-old was arrested at the end of the DND flyway after a dramatic chase.

The Delhi Police cops, Head Constable Nehander Singh and Constable Ankit Tomar, were taken to a nearby hospital where Mr Singh's condition began to deteriorate. He was then taken to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) trauma centre, where he died while being operated upon.

Tragically, the 46-year-old policeman died on the day that his son was to get engaged. His family said they had urged him to take the day off from work.

Mr Tomar has suffered injuries in the leg and was discharged after treatment.

Police said the Tavera Yash Rai was driving, was hired by the Dish TV call centre.
