Delhi: Election Commission asks for votes but with a difference

New Delhi: In an election campaign with a difference, the capital's poll panel Wednesday organised a rally seeking votes -- but not for itself. The Delhi Election Commission asked voters in east Delhi to participate massively in the Dec 4 assembly polls.

Around 2,500 people gathered in the rally, which was conducted in the Nandnagri area of east Delhi to woo voters for elections, said a DEC official.

The participants moved through the streets raising slogans for a large voter-turnout and also distributed pamphlets asking electors to take a pledge to cast their vote in the coming elections.

Similar rallies will be held in other parts of the national capital eliciting mass participation in the polls.

"These programme are being carried out consistently to create awareness among the voters about their voting rights," said the DEC official.

"Apart from this, buses and Metros plying in the various districts have been requested to greet every passenger with a request to cast their vote, if they are an elector, before issuing them travel tickets," the official said.
