AISA leading in three of four Jawaharlal Nehru University Students Union posts

New Delhi: Ultra-left All India Students Association (AISA) was in the lead for three of the top four posts including that of president in the Jawaharlal Nehru University Students Union (JNUSU) elections as counting of votes entered the last phase yesterday.

Candidate of Democratic Students Federation (DSF) was in the lead for the post of Joint Secretary as the traditional ballot paper counting went on for over 48 hours.

AISA candidate Akbar Chowdhary was in the lead in a race with DSF's Ishan Ahmed, Students Federation of India's Rahul N, National Student Union of India's Pran Veer Singh, Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad's Alok Kumar Singh and Concerned Student's Chandrasen.

Also in the presidential race is Kazakh national Akhmetbekov Zhassulan, contesting from Chhatra Janta Dal (U).

Chowdhary till last evening had received 1,214 votes followed by DSF's Ahmed who has got 472 votes till 8.30 pm. Foreign National Zhassulan had received only 10 votes till then.

According to the trends, Anubhuti Agnes Bara and Sandeep Saurabh, also AISA candidates, were leading for the post of vice president and general secretary.

Bara is leading for the vice president post with 1,325 votes followed by DSF's Zeeshan (503), while Saurab is leading for the post of general secretary with 948 votes followed by NSUI's Caroline (526).

The only post where AISA is placed second is for joint Secretary, in which DSF candidate Sonam Goyal is leading with 1,256 followed by AISA's Sarfaraz (1,050).

DSF took part in the polls alone this time.

"AISA is leading in three of top four posts of JNUSU," Chowdhary, AISA's presidential candidate, said.

These were the trends till 8.30 pm as the counting of votes was on for the central panel. The counting of votes went on post midnight and the results are expected today.

There were eight candidates fighting for the post of president, five for vice-president, six for general secretary and three for joint secretary.

An estimated 56 per cent turnout was recorded for the polling of JNUSU elections on September 13, the same day as Delhi University Student Union (DUSU) polls.

DUSU results were declared yesterday in which the ABVP wrested control from the NSUI, by winning three out of four top posts.

Last year, V Lenin Kumar, the candidate from the SFI-JNU (now known as DSF) and AISF alliance, was elected as JNUSU president.

The other three posts had gone to AISA.
