50 children missing in 8 days, human rights panel sends notice to Delhi government
New Delhi: The National Human Rights Commission today asked Delhi government and police to submit a report on claims that at least 50 children went missing from the capital in the first eight days this month.

Taking suo motu cognizance of a media report, the commission asked the chief secretary and the Police Commissioner to inform it as to whether the guidelines on missing children issued in August 2007 have been strictly followed.

The NHRC has given four weeks' time to the chief secretary and the Commissioner to submit their reports.

Defending themselves, the commission claimed, "Allegedly, the police also delays registration of complaints about missing children in many cases. This undoubtedly helps the accused in taking the children out of the city."

"The Commission has observed that the allegations, if true, raise a serious issue of violation of human rights of children," an NHRC statement said.
