Two men, including an auto driver who had been allegedly posing as senior CBI officials and cheating people of lakhs of rupees on the pretext of getting them government jobs, were arrested by the police in southeast Delhi.
The accused identified as Manmohan Vashishth alias Ranveer Vashishth, along with his accomplice Tapan Dey, an autorickshaw driver would pose as CBI officials and dupe people of lakhs of rupees on the pretext of getting them a job in Ministry of Home Affairs, Railways and other Government Departments, police said.
"The accused would trap victims by offering them fake admit cards, question papers and attendance sheet in the name of conducting examination for selection in these government departments," said Deputy Commissioner of Police (South-East) Mandeep S Randhawa.
Tapan used to accompany Vashishth for delivery of the fake papers and would also receive money on his behalf, police said, adding that the cheats would take people into confidence by showing fake ID card of Ministry of Home Affairs.
Following a complaint filed against the two, by one Vipin Verma, resident of East of Kailash and his friends of being duped of Rs 7,45,000, police launched a hunt for Manmohan.
Police said the accused had a friend who was earlier working with the sister of the complainant, Vipin Verma and she was the one who introduced the complainant with the Manmohan, who introduced himself as senior inspector with CBI.
Manmohan claimed to the complainant of having contacts with higher officials of MCD, Delhi Police, Railways, and of having many people recruited as LDC and UDC in various departments with his links and connections, he added.
Impressed by his contacts, the complainant and his friends paid Manmohan Rs 7,45,000 in installments from March 2014 to October 2014.
However, when the victims found that they have been cheated, they started demanding money from him but he switched off his mobile and left his rented accommodation, following which they lodged an FIR.
Using the photograph on the fake ID cards which the accused had given out, police started a lookout in Jaitpur area and arrested both of them on February 20.
During investigation, it was revealed that the accused Manmohan has done a diploma in Physiotherapy and was running a small clinic but closed it some time back and was now unemployed.
Soon after, Vashishth started the business of conning people, posing as an senior inspector with CBI, police said.
Police have recovered fake identity card of MHA, admit cards of Railways, Baroda House, question papers among other documents along with mobile phones used in the commission of crime.
A computer and hard disk used in the preparation of the documents, and Tapan Dey's autorickshaw have also been seized, police said, adding that further investigation is on.
