Rahman wins Golden Globe; glory for
Slumdog Millionaire
NDTV Correspondent
Monday, January 12, 2009, (New Delhi)
A R Rahman has become the first Indian to win the prestigious Golden Globe Award. He won for the Best Original Music Score for the movie Slumdog Millionaire . The movie has also won the awards for Best Screenplay, Director and Motion Picture (Drama).
Rahman's song
Jai Ho,
penned by lyricist Gulzar, has won the award for Best Original Music Score.
The film, which has strong Indian connections emerged as hot favourite at the Globe, which set the countdown for next month's Academy awards.
The film depicts the story of a Mumbai underdog's rags-to-riches run and earned three other nominations -- Best Picture-Drama, Best Director for Boyle and Best Screenplay for Simon Beaufoy.
Beaufoy has won the award.
'Slumdog' is based on a novel by Indian diplomat Vikash Swarup and stars Bollywood actors Anil Kapoor and Irrfan Khan in lead among others.
The film has been shot at various locations in Mumbai including railway station Victoria Terminus, which was a targetted by terrorists on November 26, last year.
Boyle's feel-good film depicts the moving story of a slumdweller Jamaal, who goes on to win USD 20 million on Indian reality show 'Who Wants to Be A Millionaire?' in a bid to win his love back.
The film faced stiff competition from Brad Pitt's drama 'The Curious Case of Benjamin Button'.

Since the film is about Mumbai and it is a real tribute to all those Mumbaikars and those whose died in 26/11. Pakistani based militants should learn from how India is successful and how they can also be successful as individual and as a country if they give up terrorism and hate towards India and start developing them and develop their country.

It is a very proud moment for India India is capable of producing such talent! But we need to dimantle caste system and allow the children to grow in a non partisan caste, class, creed atmosphere and the boys should not be recognised and respected by their surnames they carry because of their castes!

Correction. There was not even a nomination for "Jai Ho". That category was original song and that went to Bruce Springsteen in Wrestler. It was for the original score, which technically leaves out "Jai Ho".

This was a long pendind due. Unfortunately, no entity from our country has recognised the talent of AR Rehman and accorded this kind of highest award, which he deserves. He is the king of Indian Music. He can cater to the tastes of both "Mass" and "class". That is the USP of AR Rehman. No doubt,he is the Best in the Business. Heartiest Congrat to AR Rehman.
