US strike on Talibans in Pak kills over 12
Press Trust of India
Wednesday, August 13, 2008, (Islamabad)
More than 12 people, including foreigners, were killed in a suspected US missile strike on Taliban positions in Pakistan's south Waziristan tribal region, witnesses said on Wednesday.
Local residents said US spy planes fired at least five missiles on a house in Baghar, 30 km from south Waziristan's main town of Wana, killing more than 12 people and injuring several others late last night.
According to the local administration, Taliban fighters of the Mullah Nazir group were living in the house.
Local residents also said four Pakistani helicopters were seen patrolling the area after the missile strike. The entry and exit points of Baghar were blocked and no one was allowed to enter the area.
Sources in local hospital said six local Taliban were among the dead. Some reports said the death toll could be as high as 20 and that Arab and Turkmen militants were among the dead.
Reports also said the militant position that was targeted is linked to the group of Afghan warlord Gulbuddin Hekmatyar.
US forces in Afghanistan are believed to have carried out several such missile strikes using Predator drones on Taliban positions in Pakistan's restive northwestern tribal areas.
Pakistan has usually protested against such strikes, saying they amounted to a violation of its sovereignty.
