After Maharashtra, is it the turn of Andhra Pradesh to be declared drought-hit?

Rains have given the state a miss this year and Andhra Pradesh has been awaiting monsoon showers for over a month now, but instead of dark clouds, it seems that dark days are ahead for the state.

Shabbir Ali, Andhra Pradesh's Power Minister admits he is powerless.

Bearing the brunt is Andhra Pradesh. There is now a two-hour power cut in Hyderabad daily, five hours in the districts and industries have to go one day every week without power.

"Despite purchasing from outside, we have only 174 million units of power. That is more than 800 mega watts short of the demand," said Mohammad Ali Shabbir, Energy Minister.

For the fifth consecutive year, Andhra Pradesh will opt for cloud seeding an exercise that will cost Rs 25 crore.

"It's not too late now. Cloud seeding has helped generate 15 to 20 per cent more rainfall universally," said state Agriculture Minister Raghuveera Reddy.

The rain god playing truant in an election year is not good news for Y S Rajasekhara Reddy. This is because he can ill-afford to cut down on the seven hours of free power that his government supplies to farmers.
