Naga girl alleges discrimination at Delhi lounge bar
Sakshi Talwar
Wednesday, June 25, 2008, (New Delhi)
A 29-year-old photographer from Nagaland has taken a Delhi lounge bar to court as she was refused entry, even as others around her poured into the bar on a weeknight.
After 10 years spent in Delhi, she feels more like an outsider than ever before.
"They said I do not have a good profile. I was dressed nice and how can they judge my behaviour standing in a line? Others were being allowed in," said the photographer.
The photographer claims that she was kept out of a south Delhi bar because she is from Nagaland and now she has sued the bar demanding a formal apology.
The bar in question says it regrets what happened but says there is no question of any apology.
"It was just a mistake by the manager but we are not apologizing. Tomorrow other communities will come and tell us we are discriminating against them," said Kashif Farooq, co-owner, Urban Pind.
The incident has highlighted one of Delhi's darkest sides, the blatant discrimination against anyone from the northeast.
Young north easterners say that this is not an isolated case of a nightclub or bar being off-limits to them. In the last few months, six different cases were brought to the notice of lawyers but this is the first time that the issue has actually turned into a legal battle.
Sinti, another victim of discrimination said, "Me and my friends were refused entry in a bar as they categorically said northeasterners are not allowed. I did not say anything then but now I am raising my voice."
The shattered economy of states like Manipur and Assam has led to more college students and young workers moving to Delhi than ever before. It's not a comfortable move even at the best of times.
That's exactly why one year ago a new helpline was set up by a group called the NE helpline centre.
Members say they have had their hands full ever since and it is a telling sign of how desperately Delhi needs to change its attitude.

Its a matter of shame for the capital city of India. Instead of inquiring the foreigners frm outside, they are harassing our own countrymen. When these people will change their attitude towards the NE people. Anyways, we should not take this type of incidents for granted, rather raise the voice against discrimination. We all are with you but dnt know hw to help. Pls suggest and advice how can we people join this struggle? We are proud to be frm NE!!
