Now, an eco-friendly way to e-disposal
Samriti Grover
Tuesday, June 10, 2008, (Mumbai)
If you're looking to get rid of your old computer or TV, here's an eco-friendly way to do it.
A Mumbai-based private initiative has become Maharashtra's first and country's fourth in the field of e-trash collecting.
It uses a mobile van to pick up the pieces.
"People are used to giving stuff to the kabadiwalas and getting money for it. But proper e-waste disposal is a transitional phase and will soon catch up," says B K Soni, Chairman, Eco Reco.
Digital waste is a growing problem in metros and Mumbai generates the most. The trash is leaving a huge carbon footprint.
But there's an eco-friendly solution to the problem.
The discarded hardware is taken to a shredder at the company's plant on a conveyor belt.
After that, its components are segregated through a metal extractor. Then, workers manually separate the plastic from the metal.
And if someone has issues with data security, the entire process is filmed in the mobile van and the CD is handed over to them.
The initiative is a hit with corporates and in just three months, Eco reco already has 50 clients.
"Earlier, we used to donate to schools thinking we have done charity but we were in turn putting our problem onto someone's head," says T R Doongaji, MD, Tata Services Limited.
If the 21st century is powering down the information superhighway, the least we can do is minimise our carbon footprint.
Out of the half a million tonnes of e-waste generated by India every year, Mumbai alone contributes 30,000 tonnes to this pile. So, next time when you are disposing off your old PCs or TV sets, remember there is an eco-friendly way available.
