Hundreds of people paid tribute to marathon kid Budhia Singh's former coach Biranchi Das in Bhubaneshwar on Monday.

His body was taken in a procession to Judo Hall, an institution he had created over the last 20 years. Biranchi was shot dead in Bhubaneshwar on Sunday evening, allegedly on the orders of a local gangster.

He was 37. His body will now be taken to Puri by road for cremation at the Swarg Dwar later on Monday afternoon.

His family alleges that he was murdered by a local gangster. Police suspect gangster Raja Acharya's role in the murder, they say three men fired at Biranchi Das at a function at point blank range.

His family alleges that Biranchi was murdered because he was trying to protect a small-time actress Leslie Tripathy who was being stalked by the gangster. Raja apparently wanted to marry Leslie.

Das was instrumental in discovering the hidden talent in Budhia, who created a record of sorts by running 65 km non-stop from Puri to Bhubaneswar two years ago.

"Raja was angry that Biranchi had taken the side of the model following requests by her father to help her. But Raja wanted him to get the girl to talk to him. Biranchi refused. He pleaded with Raja not to kill him, but he opened fire," said Sushant Das, Biranchi's brother.
