Reservation to benefit us politically: Arjun Singh
Press Trust of India
Sunday, April 13, 2008, (New Delhi)
Under pressure from UPA allies to ease "stringent" parameters for eligibility of other backward castes under creamy layer concept for 27 per cent reservation, HRD Minister Arjun Singh on Sunday said increasing the current income slab of Rs 2.5 lakh per annum is one way out.
"As far as creamy layer is concerned, we will discuss the matter at the apt forum and try to find a way out. We are not going to shove it under the carpet. We are going to do whatever we can," Singh said to a private channel.
The minister also said the government will discuss the issue with its allies and try to bring a consenus.
"Increasing the slab of Rs 2.5 lakh per annum is one way out. The concerns of the allies will be taken into account -- we wil try to have a consenus on how to sort this out," he said.
The Supreme Court had on Thursday upheld the 27 per cent quota for OBCs but clarified that the creamy layer or the elite would be kept out.
The court ruled that the definition of creamy layer will be determined in accordance to the government notification issued in 1993 pursuant to the Mandal Commission judgement.
Singh also sought to allay the fears of students who don't get the benfits of the quota by saying "they will not be excluded and their concerns will be taken into account."
"I have been wanting the reservation ever since I was the Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh. We had won 40 seats then. This reservation should benefit us politically," he said.

The reservation sysstem has benefitted the politicians but created a rift in the society. They are further widening the rift and compromising with quality which is not allowing the country to progress as per its potential

The quota issue is a mere political tool. The Congress and its inefficient leader, Sonia Gandhi are taking India backwards. The party lacks vision, leaders, and morale. Any Indian with self respect should never vote for Congress as long as they have the dynasty rule with the 'Gandhi' family at the helm. Sad indeed is the state that India has been pushed to, but my friends, there will be a day when these antinational forces will be driven out of politics and a new era will emerge. The wait is not going to be long....

never. why is there no reservation for the congress chief. the congress should boldly announce that there should be only obc/st/sc candidates for pm, congress chief/secretary for the next 10 years. this people are keen on dividing the country in a worse way than the britishers.

The objective has been admitted by Arjun Singh. It is to get political mileage than to really something good for OBC or the country.

NO , NEVER,FIRST OFF ALL, ALL THE LEADERS ABOVE 60 SHOULD BE GIVEN FORCED EXILE FROM POLITICS. WHY WE RETIRE AN EMPLOYEE AFTER 58, THE REASON IS SIMPLE, INTELLIGENCE, EFFICIENCY OF PERSON REDUCES AND NEW JOBS ARE GENERATED.SAME IS APPLICABLE TO POLITICIANS AS WELL. IF I AM WRONG THEN WE SHOULD AMMEND THE EMPLOYEMENT SCHEME THEY TOO SHOULD BE ALLOWED TO WORK TILL THEY CAN. ATLEAST SOME POOR PEOPLE WILL GET BENFITED.AND BURDEN OF PENSION WILL REDUCE.
