Almost one month after a British teenager Scarlett Keeling's body was found, the Goa Police finally admitted on Thursday that she was raped and murdered.

Her death occurred due to excessive drugs and sexual assault and two people have been arrested in the connection.

How events unfolded:
  • Scarlett given cocktail of drugs with intent of raping her
  • Scarlett was already slightly high and didn't know her drink was laced with drugs
  • She was repeatedly raped on Anjuna beach by Samson
  • Scarlett fell unconscious, left in shallow waters to drown and
  • Goa Police initially said Scarlett died by drowning
Samson D'Souza has been charged with rape and murder while Placido Carvalho has been charged with the intoxicating her. The Inspector General of Police has also said that they will look into lapses in police investigations.

Almost a month after she lost her daughter Fiona Mackeon now knows who her likely killers were, men whose names were doing the rounds but who the police refused to catch.

Now in the past 24 hours what was earlier projected as a open and shut drowning case has been cracked open with more arrests and revelations. The biggest of them all Placido Carvalho, also known as Shannaboy in local circles, one of Goa's biggest drug-dealers.

Meanwhile, Samson D'Souza the first person arrested has been charged with rape and murder while Shannaboy has been charged under second 328 for administering drugs and murder with common intent.

This confession completely contradicts the initial version of Goa Police, which claimed that it was an accidental drowning, despite numerous signs of assault on her body.

According to police sources:

Samson's confessions:
  • He was with Scarlett till minutes before her death
  • Shannaboy was also with him
  • There were two-three others who were snorting cocaine and other drugs with Scarlett.

Confessions that led to the arrest of Shannaboy but Fiona is still not convinced that the police have got all the men who sexually assaulted her daughter repeatedly and supplied her with drugs.

"I am still very disappointed and don't know if they have got the right people," said Fiona Mackeon, Scarlett Keeling's mother.

The Scarlett keeling case is getting to a grim ending, the truth perhaps has been found but there is an even bigger truth, that it is the beginning of the end of a Goa that is being known as a haven of drug traffickers with powerful connections.

Disgrace to the country. Whether the parent is at fault or not isn't the govt and police supposed to grant justice and take care of the people?

Shame on the Police. Only because the mother was a brit and had exposure to better policing standards of the west she was able to stand her ground and get justice for her daughter. Imagine if it had been an Indian girl who had been raped and murdered-the police would have teamed with the drug dealers and covered the whole thing up. Shame on Goa police. Shame on all police across this corrupt country.

This is probably why we don't get more than a fraction of the tourists we should

Undoubtedly, its a lapse on part of our Police but I am surprised why it never came out that she was raped in the post morterm conducted at first instance.

The story of rape and murder of women in India is DISGUSTING and SHAMEFUL. we worship goddesses, treat women everyday as chattels and if we were to collect rape statistics, am sure it would amount to one a minute in this country. RAPE SHOULD BE AWARDED WITH CAPITAL PUNISHMENT. Also, the people of GOA came in large numbers to fight against teh governement, saying SEZ's would affect tourism. How come they are silent now? So many cases of rape adn molestation in Goa, drugs are rampant - are they in agreement with all of this? Will this not affect the image and tourism of their precious state? SELFISH CREATURES - wehen their land is affected, tehy reacted. when their own inebriated people rape other women, they overlook it and go on like nothing has happened. they goa government should make their slogan to "NO GO GOA" not "GO GO GOA"

Even though it has happened with somebody else…one can feel deep sorrow. I pray this never happens again with anyone. How can any person think of giving drugs…raping and finally leaving her to die… & I think again this is a lie this person definitely killed her. One should harshly punish such pp …so this shameful act cannot be repeated. The pain what her mother is going through cannot be imagined but we all pary that her daughter finally gets justice and finally lie in piece. Shame on Indian men, society , govt---Lets join hand together so that this act is never repeated

There are several comments on this shameful act. However, the most important reason, I feel, is lack of proper education. Our government should really make all the people mentally matured by aiding with proper basic education so that these thoughts never come into their mind.

I am writing from Britain and I find it frightening and reprehensible that this case was initially dismissed as a drowning. It took efforts from the mother to actually photograph her daughter's dissected body on the autopsy table to demonstrate the blatantly obvious bruises covering her body. Now several elements of the media have had the temerity to attack the mother's behavior and wisdom in allowing her daughter to be apart from her, to the extent that they have little sympathy for her loss. A moral inversion of such depravity really paints a sad picture of modern 24/7 news coverage which must opportunistically run with every outrageous story. It furthermore reflects the sorry state of the local police, who appear to be seriously considering action against her mother. This, in my eyes, would be a purely vexatious action intended as retribution for their earlier failings, and should not be allowed to proceed.

This is a gr8 disgrace for our country.... our counrty has significant revenue from tourism and this shameful act will ruin one of the only few hopes we have to revive our economy. All root cause of it is population, male to female ratio, lack of job, lack of education. Where is our country leading. What direction are our leaders giving. What plans they have. Our media is busy in covering cricket IPL / ICL. It is something which we have to think about deeply.

This is not a shame on India because no indian would leave his/her daughter in the hands of someone and go on a pleasure trip. This is an example of very bad parenting and not the problem of Goa. You will find durgs in any part of this world so the mother should take responsiblity knowing the age of the the girl, not Goa because this could have happened to Scarlett even in the UK because durg are available for people who go in search of it anywhere. Well this is not good for the tourism of Goa if such things keep happening. BUT don't blame INDIA OR INDIANS for this.

The dark side of Goa has finally been revealed. One can only hope that the government learns something from this tragedy and will finally put an end to the disgusting drug trade that thrives in Goa.

Is it just about Goa? Headlines have been hitting the news sites for almost all the major tourist destinations in India.Who is to be blamed? Who needs to justify? Who needs to act? Citizens. Our Nation is not to create the fear, it's a symbol of unity, diversity, beauty and love. What could have been done if it was to happen to an Indian tourist abroad? Or may be you or us, any time of the day? Where do we draw the line? How can we STOP? Where is the end of lust? Who among us are humans? Who needs to change? Public or the system?

It is the most horrible thing to violate a human body, let alone that of a young woman. The speculation of nexus seems to be accurate. This matter should be investigated more throughly and no let go. The tourism industry of Goa may be @ stake, but what use is it if it flourishes by covering up a crime as henious as this.

Another shameful act. Shame for all Indians. Such criminals must be given extreme punishment in public. For it, public must act, as Indian law is going to release them soon.

this story is making headlines all over the world. goa police does not realize that tourism is major revenue generation for its local. the goa police has done a shameful work in this investigation and covering up the nexus between police and tourist guides. as per the victims mother the investigation should be handed over to CBI and the ones held guilty should be punished.

ITS A SHAMEFUL THING FOR THE GOA GOVERNMENT A MOTHER OFTHEDECEASED HAS TO COME AND DO THE INVESTIGATION AND FIND OUT THAT HER DAUGHTER WAS MURDERED. THIS SHOWS HOW MUCH THE GOA POLICE IS CORRUPT AND THE CHIEF MINISTER SUPPORTS HIS CORRUPT POLICE FORCE THIS SHOWS HE WANTS TO SAVE SOME DRUG CARTEL IN HIS OWN GOVERNMEN. DEFINETELY CBI ENQUIRY IN NEEDED. THE PRESS SHOULD FIGHT FOR INDEPENDANT POLICE FORCE.

The Goa police are a complete joke. Everyone knows they operate on bribes and that explains why drug lords are still functioning well in Goa. They tried to cover up an innocent girls murder by making her out to be a drug addict who couldnt swim. Ridiculous... & they should be ashamed of themselves. The whole world knows theyre nothing but corrupt liars.

    NDTV Posted By manohar-Thursday, March 13, 2008
State Govt. should immediately hand over the case to CBI and assist in giving justice to the family of the deceased. India should be seen as a just and fair country internationally in handling such criminal cases. A great opportunity for India to show justice at the earliest possible.
